Independent Artists Presents: New Day

As we enter this new year full of exciting possibility, we thought it fitting to produce a set of images full of warmth and energy. Stylist Amy Hays completely transformed the Tilly House and put together looks to paint her visual story with beautiful patterns and textures. Hair & makeup artist Kay Reeder effortlessly created natural and beautiful looks for models Becca from Wallflower Management and Allison from Kim Dawson. With the assistance of producer Willy Adams, photographer Heather Key, art director Jane Baker, and assistant stylist Doug Voisin, the team came together to conceive a series of photographs which showcase some of our cities most talented artists.

Creative director Tammy Theis states that the latest issue of The Wallflower "wasn’t planned as an ode to rebels, but as the stories came in, there was a thread of that spirit in each one. In Nick Prendergrast’s rebel youth, stylist Ariella Villa referenced the work of swiss photographer Karlheinz Weinberger who documented Swiss, working class teenagers in the ‘50s and ’60s who created their own look fusing iconic american pop culture imagery - biker jackets, denim jeans, bouffany hairdos and elvis - into their own style of defiant gang glamour."

The editorial styled by Ariella Villa also featured jewelry created by Benjamin Hubert for his Tetanus collection.

The second editorial in the issue styled by Ariella is shot by German born photographer Claudia Grassil who shot a trio blondes whose long manes of hair become a symbol of youthful defiance.

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk

Coming to the Dallas Museum of Art on November 13th is the first exhibition purely dedicated to the work of Jean Paul Gaultier, who is indisputably one of the most groundbreaking designers of our time. His early sketches and concepts caught the eye of Pierre Cardin in the early 70's, which led to Gaultier's first collection in 1976. Because of his unusual and unique perspective, and given his young age, he was dubbed by critics as the "enfant terrible" of the fashion world. He went on to design 10 of his own namesake brands, including an Haute Couture collection, and also was asked to take on the role of creative director of Hermes from 2003-2010. He draws his inspiration largely from pop culture, taking everyone from Madonna to Klaus Nomi as muses, in addition to television, and stars of the stage and film. The exhibit contains 140 Haute Couture and Ready-to-wear pieces spanning his entire career.

Dallas is blessed to be the first of only 2 cities to which this exhibit is traveling. Additionally, our own agency director Siobhan Westapher has accepted a seat on the welcoming committee board alongside other Dallasites in the industry.

Ft. Worth Opera!

This past spring IA's Amy Van Cleave had the opportunity to fashion style a shoot for the 2012 Ft. Worth Opera Theatre campaign. She worked with the fabulously talented NYC based designer Dana Tanamachi, whose custom chalk lettering and illustrations have gained her widespread internet buzz and an impressive client list to match. Kelsey Foster's fresh, young vision made her the perfect photographer for this series of images inspired by the upcoming shows at the opera house. Amy pulled merch from V.O.D. and Grange Hall in order to construct contemporary characters from the opera in these photographs.

Over it's short life, Wallflower has expanded from 5 to 81 models, and has sent beautiful boys and girls all over the world from Paris to Sydney. This year they've sent Jeremy off to Paris twice to walk for Givenchy, and sent 3 girls off to NYC signing with Silent and walking in the upcoming spring collections in September. Creative Director Tammy Theis writes, "Now that we're in our terrible twos there's no telling what will happen next. We're like that over anxious toddler that just learned how to push the boundaries and assert his personality-and maybe cause a little mayhem in the process."

For the cover editorial the F|D crew headed west for a trip Marfa, which just so happened to coincide with the Railroad Revival Tour. Smith who is famous for her raw snapshots of the colorful inhabitants of small town America. She Was an American Girl

Recently IA's Tara Tonini took off on an adventure across Europe to open a pop-up retail shop in Berlin, Germany. The boutique, "She Was an American Girl", was conceived during a daydream Tara had while listening to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Her goal is to introduce the work of American artists, designers, and musicians to the European market. With this project she hopes to motivate all creatives to "stop dreaming and start living" and to realize that "anything you set your mind to, you can accomplish".

St. Nick

Currently showing at the Texas Theatre is a double-feature from director David Lowery. His feature film St. Nick, with art direction by IA's own Jonathan Rudak, received rave reviews and received the grand jury prize at AFI Dallas. The showing is part of the Texas Independent Film Network.

Also showing by Lowery is his short film Pioneer which received honors and an award at this year's SXSW film festival. It stars Will Odham and was cast by IA repped producer Bertha Salazar.

The double feature is showing at the Texas Theatre at select times from the 13th through the 19th.

This month's issue of F|D LUXE features a cover and spread with set design by Andrew Bayer and fashion styling by Tammy Theis! Andy certainly has a talent for crafting fantastical environments out of unusual materials, and creating a luxurious world all in studio with precision and style. Tammy pulled the finest pieces from the spring collections including merchandise by Prada, McQueen, Isabel Marant, Jil Sander, and Marni. With the help of styling assistant Ariella Villa, Theis pulled together immaculate looks in a style definably her own. The images were taken by Mindy Byrd and feature Kim Dawson's Mimi Roche and Wallflower's Morgan Thompson. On Saturday, April 9th West Texas was devastated by a wildfire that ignited and spread around the area of Marfa and into Ft. Davis. Fortunately, Marfa saw no damage whatsoever, but Ft. Davis was devastated having homes, ranches, livestock, and business burned to the ground. Over 60,000 acres of land have been ruined, and Jeff Davis county has been deemed a federal disaster zone.

How you can help:

Fort Davis/Jeff Davis County Volunteer Fire Department Chief Robert Poenisch says 3-phase electricity generators are needed. Reach him at 432.426.3900.
Persons displaced by the fire should meet with American Red Cross officials at 9am Monday at the fire station, behind the Jeff Davis County Courthouse in downtown Fort Davis.
Food and water are still needed, says Marfa City Attorney and McDonald Observatory resident Teresa Todd. Call the Marfa fire station at 432.729.4838 or drop by the station in front of the Presidio County Courthouse. Likewise, food and water still are needed at the Fort Davis fire station.
Make a monetary donation to the Marfa and Fort Davis volunteer fire departments. They’ll need money to make repairs to their equipment after they fight the fire and to restock supplies: Marfa Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 846, Marfa, Texas 79843. The Jeff Davis County Volunteer Fire Department, P. O. Box 1061, Fort Davis, TX 79734. Any amount will help and is appreciated.

This Friday the Dallas Contemporary hosts the work of acclaimed fashion photographer Jurgen Teller! His work has been featured in the pages of Vogue, i-D, and W, has photographed the campaigns of Marc Jacobs, YSL, and Celine, and has shown his work at renowned art galleries all over the world. The executive

director of the Contemporary Peter Doreshenko scored Teller's first institution exhibition in the United States outside of New York City. The series is titled Man with Banana, which takes it's name from a photograph he snapped of the fashion industry's favorite gender-bender Anrej Pejic.

The images within the series were taken specifically for installation at the Dallas contemporary.

The opening reception is Friday night at 8pm-12am.

Pioneer, a short film directed by North Texas based film maker David Lowery, recently won an award at the SXSW film festival!

Casting for the short was done by IA producer Bertha Salazar and stars Myles Brooks and Will Oldham. The film also went to Sundance this year. The entirety of the film takes place within the confines of one room, and consists of a father (Oldham) telling his son a grand and imaginative story before bed.

IA welcomes the talented Andrew Bayer! Andrew has been working as a stylist in Dallas for the past 7 years, in addition to involvement in a large host of other creative projects. In partnership with assistant stylist Doug Voisin, Andrew has produced a collection of women's ready to wear titled, "House of Dang" for the past 5 years, which existed as part of a storefront they owned together in uptown Dallas. Previous to creating his own designs, Bayer assisted in producing and styling numerous runway shows and fashion events. With a fresh vision and an incredibly contagious, exciting energy, we can't wait to see what Andrew will devise next.

Nieman Marcus Holiday Windows!

This years Neiman Marcus holiday windows reach a new dimension with stars, robots, chimp astronauts and a climbing tube that stretches outside and over the sidewalk. The festive downtown display, which was the concept of VP of store development Ignaz Gorischek, was assembled with the help of some of Independent Artists' very own production assistants.

The theme for this year is "Big Encounters of the Little Kind", which allows children ages 4-10 to crawl through the window display with monitors placed inside to capture the actions of the climbers. "And this has never really been done anywhere before," said Gorischeck, "You've never been able to go into a show window before this. The other full interactive thing that adults will enjoy is that you can text into the windows, and control some special effects in the windows as well, so even when there aren't kids in the windows, it's still very interactive."

Pony Creek Ranch, which is newly represented by IA, is described as "the best 1000 acres in the northern hill country of Texas".

Pony Creek has deep roots in north Texas, originally spanning 10,000 acres when it was founded in 1884. It was untouched and uninhabited from 1940 to 1991 until the Berry family took it over and restored it into a gorgeous property.

In addition to the lush greenery, beautiful creek, and amazing main house, the ranch hosts numerous species of animals. Some are local wildlife while other are indigenous to Africa and Asia.

At the end of last month our agency was involved in shooting the new Northpark ad campaign designed by the Banowetz company. We were privileged to work with world renowned photographer, and all around charming talent, Judson Baker. Michael Kanyon, who is newly represented by IA, was responsible for the fabulous, gravity defying hair. Also on set were our own Lisa Williams, Tammy Theis, and Ariella Villa. The campaign features Russian beauty Yana Sotnikova.

Tetanus Jewelry

Local jewelry designer Benjamin Hubert has been gaining a lot of online buzz with his alchemical, somewhat macabre line, Tetanus Jewelry, which he designs and promotes in partnership with IA stylist Ariella Villa.

The piece that seems to be popping up all over the internet is the now infamous "Cockroach Cameo" which has been featured on blogs all over the web from Perez Hilton to Sea of Shoes.

Buzz aside, Hubert and Villa want to assure you, Tetanus is "more than just cockroaches".

The pieces are all made by hand in Hubert's home studio using found objects, mixed metals, bugs, bones, teeth, all customized through oxidation, fire, tea staining, and dying processes.

His new pieces are available for purchase online, in Dallas at Dolly Python, and in Ft. Worth at Shampoo Salon.

IA's own Sally Glass has an opening reception for her photography exhibition, "Iris Folds", this weekend at Bows and Arrows. In an interview with We Shot JR, Glass described her show as, " [Images] constructed to exist as its own foreign universe, or one that feels foreign or alien, but that also appears recognizable in a way. Nothing is intended to be completely representational of anything in our world, in our realms of perception. So there's a lot of color, unrecognizable shapes... they're basically just abstract landscapes."

To see the whole series go to Bows and Arrows tomorrow night, Saturday the 31st, from 7-10pm.

Though the boutique has been open for a decade in Florence, they have wisely made their fabulous luxury merchandise available through online sale as the fashion industry has gone viral. Whether or not you have a deep seated interest in fashion, or the immense budget to afford most of the pieces, you are sure to find at least a couple pieces that you would seriously consider dying for (or at the very least starving for).

Saturday Night in Dallas

Saturday the 5th in Dallas was a busy night for art enthusiasts. To start off the evening, POPUP 310 hosted a closing party with the help of F!D Luxe. It really is a shame to see Popup close down, but we're excited to see what these creative fellas will get into in the future. While it may have only been a functioning space for about 4 months, some of Dallas' most talented artists and most fabulous parties have been hosted there.

Copies of F!D Luxe were given away to party goers in addition to gift bags. Becca, the model featured on the cover, is signed with Dallas based agency Wallflower Management which is managed by IA stylist Tammy Theis. She also styled Becca for an editorial in the issue titled "Farmville."

In love with the Celine wedges Tammy pulled for this shot. Phoebe Philo certainly reigns victorious as the queen of camel.

Chanel, Chanel, Chanel

Everyone is dying for these Miu Mius.

UTD grad Brent Ozaeta was one of the many artists showcasing their work at the show. He's been showing in Dallas for the past 3 years and is represented by The Public Trust.

Next on the agenda was Tramaine Townsend's exhibit at 1111 Dragon St. in the design district.

His photographs were cleverly mounted between 2 frames of glass to create the illusion of free floating images.

All together Dallas continued to prove itself as a creatively rich city, full of amazingly talented artists, gorgeous gallery spaces, and a supportive, knowledgeable scene.

Resort 2011

Phoebe Philo delivered another simple, chic, and amazing collection.

Riccardo Tisci added a touch of leopard this season bringing some diversity to the usual black, white, and red palette we've become so accustomed to the past 5 years at Givenchy.

Christopher Bailey's newest resort collection, though it looks more like pre-fall, is a gorgeous example of what can be done with a color palette limited to navy, camels, blacks, and grays. This elegant line follows the trend we've seen on runways for the past few seasons creating season-less, classic pieces that can be transformed to fit your wardrobe from summer to winter.
Many may think it odd that Bailey chose to show heavy leather jackets and lined overcoats for Resort, but honestly though, who cares? Comfort is easily sacrificed when pieces this gorgeous are concerned.

Artifacts By Casey

North Texas native Casey Perez moved to New York in 2005 to attend NYU as a psychology major where she discovered a previously hidden talent while taking a jewelry design course. It was in this class that she changed her career path and launched herself full force into the fashion industry. Her drive and style caught the eye of NYC jewelry maker Digby & Iona where she interned before launching her own brand Artifacts by Casey.

What is most interesting about her jewelry is the fact that every piece is designed and hand constructed by Perez herself, with the goal of constructing pieces that have people stop and think. The passion to create thought provoking accessories gives her an almost purely Dadaist approach to design, attempting to create transformable, raw pieces out of ordinary objects.

Her eagerly anticipated new collection, which is still in development, draws it's inspiration from a more industrial/punk aesthetic while still remaining completely organic. It contains tons of smashed metals and mesh while still maintaining her signature design style. Also in the works is a collaboration with a stylist for Academy for Men who will be incorporating her pieces into a 30 page spread on denim.

With numerous stockists from Brooklyn to Melbourne, a constantly expanding brand , and a feature in the February 2010 issue of Nylon Magazine, Perez certainly is a designer to watch.

V.O.D + POPUP310 Trunk Show

Last Wednesday local boutique V.O.D and POPUP310 collaborated on an event showcasing the designs of Tiffany Tuttle and Arielle De Pinto. Fashion enthusiasts, artists, stylists, photographers, and Dallasites of all types were out in full force to take a peek at two of the fashion industries burgeoning designers.

LA based shoe and accessories designer Tiffany Tuttle (LD Tuttle) has a fresh, raw vision that translates into smart, simple, and timeless pieces. She's worked for Givenchy, designed for Erin Wasson, and has an extensive number of stockists from California all the way to Kuwait.

What really makes these creations unique and spectacular, aside from the impeccable quality and incredible materials, is the transformable, subtle details in her designs. It's obvious that
every stitch, lace, buckle, and component of each shoe is thought out and purposeful.

It seemed like everyone was in love with this modernized, twisted take on the lace up boot. The diagonal lace and claw-like heel bring this classic shoe into the 21st century.

These amazing slouched sling backs stopped the show. The creamy, gorgeous leather is seriously what dreams are made of.

This uneven wedge perfectly exemplifies the tough, feminine element found in all of Tuttle's designs. A muted color palette of dark hues, distressed suede, and a semi-futuristic yet simple shape creates the perfect boot.

I immediately fell in love with these convertible fold-over boots. They can be worn mid-calf or knee high, and are made of the richest, most buttery leather, the likes of which I don't think a combat boot has ever seen before.

Also for sale that night was the beautifully designed, exceptional jewelry by Canadian designer Arielle De Pinto. She uses an uncommon approach to creating her jewelry by treating metal wires and chains as fibers, and crocheting durable yet delicate looking pieces.

Her unique style and organic designs can more accurately be described as wearable art than jewelry.

All together the night was an amazing success. The people were fabulous, the space was fantastic, and the fashion was even better.

Neiman Marcus Exclusive Balenciaga Bags

Thursday, May 20th, marked the 10 year anniversary of the iconic Balenciaga city motorcycle bag. The city has been an iconic "it bag" for what seems like forever, and has been worn on the arms of some the most powerful women in fashion. To celebrate a decade of success, Balenciaga unveiled a line in collaboration with Neiman Marcus to be sold exclusively online and at select locations.

The trademark Balenciaga distressed, soft, and cracquele-finish calfskin leather accompanies the subdued metallic colors perfectly. The bag comes in Noir, Bronze, and Bois de Rose, all unique to this line.

It is also the first to have a patterned lining, all bags coming before it having the same black cotton interior. The fabric is taken from the designs put down the runway by Nicolas Ghesquiere during the Fall 2009 season.

You won't be able to find these at Barney's, in Balenciaga boutiques, or anywhere else but at select Neiman Marcus locations and online.
